The best biking trails in the UK

In a country with such a variety of landscapes as the UK bike enthusiasts will find a lot to keep them busy. If you like riding your bike on terrain that is somewhat wilder than a city street, then you won’t have any trouble finding some exciting bike trails in the UK. Biking is one of the best ways to go sightseeing in nature and cities both, it keeps pollution levels at a minimum and besides, it’s healthy and liberating. So if you want to put your wheels to work, here are some of the best biking trials in the UK.

Ennerdale Water, Cumbria

Since Cumbria is part of the Lake District, biking in this area might sound like pure insanity to some. The Lake District is not only famously beautiful, it also has some notoriously steep hills that require some serious stamina to conquer. However, Ennerdale Water has some surprisingly gentle fells. You can bike from Ennerdale Water to Black Sail Hut, a former shepherd’s bothy.

Bedgebury, Kent

Bedgebury National Pinetum has very well organized amenities for bikers: you get showers, you can rent bicycles and you can even find specially adapted bikes for people with disabilities. There are several trails in Bedgebury, some of which are just perfect for rookie riders or kids, and others that will pose a challenge to seasoned mountain bikers too.

The Quantocks, Somerset

The Quantock Hills are mellow and gentle at times, and steep and dangerous at others, and they offer a surprising number of trails even for those who want a bit of a challenge. Choose a trail on the rolling parts of the hills and admire the scenery and the view over Exmoor without being disturbed, or pick the adventurous path for an adrenaline surge.

Dark Peak, Derbyshire

Dark Peak is no trifle, and you need a good constitution and strong thigh muscles to manage this trail, but if you’re not averse to some physical exertion, you’ll be rewarded with some magnificent views of the Ladybower Reservoir. Dark Peak is wild and can sometimes be rather bleak, but it makes for a great biking experience.

Afan Forest, Swansea

Afan Forest has a great bike center where you will find everything you need, and although the center and some of the trails sure seem welcoming, Afan Forest is home to some of the most difficult descents in the UK. There are over 14 miles of bike trails of varying difficulty, and almost all of them offer great views of Swansea Bay and the surrounding valleys.
